One of the benefits of being part of a a theatre group is having the opportunity to shoot charismatic people in unusual settings wearing fantastic costumes. Doing multiple setups on one afternoon is quite a challenge! Early this year we took over the Brisbane Arts Theatre to shoot promotional images for the ImproMafia 2012 season, including headshots for many of the core members. We had about 15 minutes for each setup, with lighting maestro Tim Gawne providing continuous lighting and setting up the cyc for a few shots. Set up, discuss character and theme, set up, shoot… next!

Each year, the best improvisers from around Australia gather for the Theatresports National Championships. In 2011, Brisbane is hosting the Nationals as part of the Off the Cuff Festival of Improvised Theatre, from Thursday 29 September through Saturday 1 October. Tickets are available from the Powerhouse website.

Amy, Dan and Tom are representing Queensland in the 2011 Nationals. I hung out with them for some promotional pictures in one of my favourite photo niches in Fortitude Valley. I love working with actors – give them a character or an emotion and they know how to pose for it, and when you ask them to, they bring the cheese.

All three nights of Off the Cuff will be brilliant, with evenings featuring shows from around the country as well as some of Brisbane’s most popular improvised shows (including Agatha Holmes). Who knows – you might even see me there.

The very clever improvisers of ImproMafia recently delivered a season of Agatha Holmes at the Brisbane Arts Theatre. It’s not very often one gets the chance to take pictures of a manic drug-addled detective, a salty sea captain, a silver-screen siren, and a French conwoman masquerading as Russian royalty… all in costume and on set!
