Anywhere Theatre Festival 2014

Each year, the Anywhere Theatre Festival takes over Brisbane, running events… well, pretty much anywhere! Promotional material is a pretty important part of any production, and I was happy to work on the promotional images for three shows this year.

Thank Troggg You’re Here

Brett Hansen of Larrikin Puppets is the mastermind behind Troggg. I’ve shot puppets a few times before, but I wasn’t prepared for the presence and interaction of this blue marvel. He’s very cool, and my gosh he’s BIG. Brett, and Brad Daniels of EDGE Improv, premiered their show Thank Troggg You’re Here at the Anywhere Theatre Festival this year. It was a hit, and will be appearing again at various festivals throughout the year. Check out Larrikin’s events page for details.

Rimmelzwaan Robinson & White

Luke Rimmelzwaan, Wade Robinson, and Brittany White are lawyers by day, improvising actors by night. Their worlds collided in Rimmelzwaan Robinson & White at the Fox hotel.

The prep for this shoot was decidedly minimal – a quick walk out to the street, and a few shots in front of a bottle shop. Then inspiration hit: “Hey guys, what do you think about stuffing yourselves in to that phone booth?” No hestitation – in they go, resulting in some images I really like. 🙂

Brisbane Theatresports Championship

Impromafia produced the Brisbane Theatresports Championship for the festival – also upstairs at the Fox hotel. The brief for this one was “nerdy hipsters” – I think we nailed it 🙂

Dawn at the Old Museum

Band of Dawn. You may recognise these guys from a previous blog post.

A few months ago we did a photo session with them for their album “The Spinning Jenny – Volume 1”.  It was an amazing experience to work with this band, such elaborate costumes and amazing concepts. I was beside myself that my editing ended up on the COVER of the album.  Definitely a proud moment in my working life.  People probably wondered who the squealing lunatic was in JB Hi Fi.

Our next job with Dawn was to photograph their show at The Old Museum in Brisbane at the beginning of their Australian East Coast tour.

Their songs are a blend of folk, Celtic and Western styles.  Haunting lyrics and melodies, making you imagine a time gone by or a time yet to come.  We were so happy to get to go along and hear their music but of course Kris was in his element, being able to capture photos of the band during the show.  It shows a different side, the side that you see only in the moment.  For some reason, I love photos taken at live shows.  Knowing that you were there and saw these people in real life.  It’s different to a posed photo.  I think it’s because it’s a moment that you cannot go back and get again. It’s a snapshot of a split second in time.

The Band of Dawn.  A beautiful Victorian-Steampunk look.  Costumes by Clockwork Butterfly. Stage dressing by Jodie Hilton.

Left to right: Brent Moetara (Harmonica), Nathan Moore (Drums), Stirling Gill-Chambers (Electric Amazing Violin Thing), Brenton Page (Bass), Richard Grantham (Strings), Andrew Yeldham (Guitar), Lauren Mackay (Keyboards and vocals)

Kimberley Dawn Lysons (Lead Vocals)

The fun after the show.

Thank you once again Dawn for inviting us in to your world to take some amazing images.  I cannot wait to work on another project with you.

MDS 2013 Concert

Images by Anderson is capturing all of the colour and action of Monika’s Unlimited Dance School‘s 2013 Concert at the University of Queensland’s Schonell Theatre. (You might remember us from the studio session a few weeks ago, where Wanda captured some fantastic images of some of the older performers.)

Families of Monika’s can check out the Gallery from Monday December 16. The gallery password is on the concert flyer, or you can contact the staff at Monika’s and they’ll pass it on to bona fide students and their families. 5×7-inch and 8×10-inch prints are available for purchase directly from the gallery, either individually or in packs of three or five. For other options (framed prints, canvases, light blocks), hit the Contact Us link above and we’ll help you out.

Please note that our lab closes for Christmas very soon. Gallery print orders submitted by 11am Wednesday 18 December and shipped by courier should arrive by Christmas. (Australia Post delivery will do their best, but it’s a busy time of year.) The gallery will continue to accept on-line orders over the break, and our lab will start processing those orders again from Monday 13 January. While you’re waiting, you can download, share and enjoy Facebook-sized images.

Don’t forget our special offer for MDS students and families – book a portrait session before February 28 2014, and when you order a canvas or framed print, we’ll give you one of our gorgeous acrylic Lightblocks as a gift! Just email Wanda if you’d like to know more. You might want a session with your family, or maybe a session just for you with multiple locations and wardrobe changes.
